Weather

Weather.com

In my opinion, weather.com is the most functional of the weather sites. It is published by the weather channel and offers several outlets for weather information. You can search for any city through its name or zip code, and then find out the current weather, as well as upcoming weather. You can view it by the hour, for the current day, and daily highs and lows all the way to 10 days out. It is also very simple to navigate with the search bar at the top.

The whole site is very user-friendly and well designed.

InDesign

I was recently looking for websites to help me get a better handle on InDesign. I found this one that has some pretty good tips, especially for beginners.

http://desktoppub.about.com/od/adobeindesignbasics/Adobe_InDesign_Basics.htm

Disney

I'm a dork and I still love the Disney Channel so I visit the site a lot when there's nothing on TV. They have Webisodes now of some of their shows plus music videos from up-and-comers that are contracted with Disney. It's pretty cool. Disney Channel

This one's for the girls

I don't know why I just now thought of this but there is a website that I have been going to for years called Alloy.com It's an online magazine plus shopping for girls. Lotsa fun to go to when one is bored. So if anyone actually reads this and goes there, I hope you have fun.

James Avery

Jamesavery.com is a very classy website. Each type of jewelry has its own navigation bar. And after that it is divided again on the page. For example bracelets...click on the navigation at the top titled bracelets and it will take you to a page that is full of different kinds. They are further divided into what type of bracelet you want to search for. On all the pages there is a search bar where you can find jewelry based on catalog number, type, theme/category, gemstone, metal, and price range.

Justice for All

www.jfaweb.org is a website that gives information about the pro-life organization, Justice for All. Their website is basic and each navigation has a few links or maybe none at all. This makes page of the website exactly what it says. If you want to read the mission, then click on that or if you want to see pictures click Campus photos. The website is also interactive. They have a "tour" of the brochure that they pass out at the college they visit. The colors they chose for the website are very bold.

conwayonline.com

This website is put out by the Conway, Arkansas Chamber of Commerce. It is loaded with text, and has implemented, of late, some new basic flash images. It is very informative and the navigation is best used when you use the out-links. Navigation within the site is relatively easy, but lacks ease of use for first-time users. There is little consistency between sub-pages.

cloudland.net

Tim Ernst is perhaps the best known nature and wildlife photographer in Arkansas. His website, cloudland.net, features his coffee table books and information on how to attend his workshops. Unfortunately, his web design skills are up to part with his photography. Ths site is thorough, but presentation isn't too fancy. His online store is basically a bunch of thumbnail images with a very bland "add to cart" feature when checking out. The navigation bar is useful (and has been updated recently) but still lakcs a lot of easy navigation.

MacConnection

www.macconnection.com is a site that I have used frequently this semester. I have looked at the site as an alternative to Apple's main store. The prices are much more reasonable and they usually offer extras. The site is easily navigable with a navbar on the left side of the page. colors are simple, and it's easy to find what you're looking for. The Checkout cart is made simple, and purchases via credit card are easy. I find the site useful.

eat an apple

The apple start page is pretty cool. It's sleek, and definitely an ad site, because it has pictures of the products at the top of the page. It's easy to navigate, though, by looking at the tool bars. I like the music download tabs on the side. The white colour gives it a nice clean look.

shipping trackage

So most of us have used Amazon. It's pretty cool, because you can see where your packages are--how the items you've ordered are making their way to you. My friend, CO, though, is upset because she can't change tracking. An item didn't make its way here in time, so it needs to be redirected to reach her before Christmas. It seems like this should be possible, because Amazon knows exactly where the package is and can re-send it. It's not, though, which seems like lousy customer service.

Flashworks galore

Spoken For is a youth outreach organization based in Dallas. The website is pretty good initially, but it hasn't been updated in a while, so is kind of confusing to navigate through. One must sift through lots of old information to get to the new stuff. And there are flash animations, which take a while to load, and which Lannie says are not good. Overall, though, the site has a good basis--probably just needs some work to get it updated.

xanga

Okay, so most of us have been to xanga.com. It's a pretty cool blog, I've always thought. It seems pretty simple, now, though, which I guess is how it can cater to so many people at the same time. All of the codes for creating a site are ones we've learned in here, just plugged in to a template. That's pretty cool.

News

I have been trying to watch the news more often these days due to the fact that I'm graduating in five days and going into the field of journalism-keeping up with the world around me may not be a bad idea. I flip from CNN, CNN Headline, and Fox News and don't necessarily have a preference. I just go with which channel isn't in a commercial break and which channel is covering an interesting story at the moment. Since CNN has been reviewed, I'll review Fox News' website. It is fairly simple in color scheme and design and has quite a lengthy navigation, yet the homepage has the latest stories listed. It's a lot of text, but it's a news channel website! The whole "ripper" story is pretty disturbing, considering I got to take the "Jack the Ripper" Walk when I was on the European Study Tour. Check it out at www.foxnews.com

Planet Wisdom

I had never heard of this site until a contact I had made told me he wrote reviews for it. It is targeted for teenagers, but it has a very nice design. It is a movie/music review site with a Christian perspective, but it is handled unlike any similar review site I've seen. Check it out at www.planetwisdom.com

Google

Has anyone ever noticed how Google sometimes changes the layout of the logo on the main search page? Today its imitating the painting "The Scream" by Edvard Munch. You know, of the alien doing the Home Alone scream. Anyway I think it's really cool how they do that sometimes.

complete-review.com

For those who love to read a visit to this website is essential. It has a book review on just about anything ever published and in my experience is mostly correct in whether something is good or not. It also has alot of links to other good review blogs and editors pick's. I hate the design as it looks very thrown together and immature but love the site.

orisinal.com

this is a site with free online games that are beautifully designed and easy to play, another fun way to waste time and play some slightly more original games.

zefrank.com

This is basically a blog but has alot of very amusing videos of 'how to's' and such. Mindless entertainment. Look at it when you are bored. Its simple and easy to find what you are looking for. The colors are fun.

freetranslation.com

Everyone at OBU has to take language classes and this site allows for a much quicker reference to what a word means than searching through a text book. It is very straightforward and easy to use, you just have to select the language the word is in to the language it need to be translated into and type in your word. It has saved me on many occasions, try it out.

TVguide.com

This a website where you can search for a show according to your local listing. The home page contains quick links to the current tv news either for the week or the month. There is also a section where you can choose "TV" or "Movies on TV" or "Online Video." It is a list of the "hot" shows and movies. The website also has blogs for shows and reviews under a section called community. One last thing that the home page has a section for is a guide for your time zone. This is helpful because you don't have to search through all the tv news to find the guide. The only thing I don't like is the amount of navigation. There is so much of it I get tired of looking for anything since I am not their to find out the latest gossip.

wikipedia

I am suprised that no one has mentioned this site as it is the source of all knowledge. It is an online encyclopedia that has references to EVERYTHING. It comes in several different languages and although the design is simple, it is effective and easy to navigate with a search bar. The first page comes with random facts that are always worth the read.

New York and Company

nyandcompany.com is a website for the store New York and Company. They have recently updated their website. It used to be a place for them to show their new fashion and styles, but now they have made it where you can buy clothes and accesories online. It is very easy to navigate around the site because beneath under each menu there is a detailed menu. For example, if you select "apparel" it will then take you too a page of all apparel they have in their store. So if you click on sweaters, you will find all the sweaters they sell. But if you don't feel like going through all those menus, there is a search bar where you can type in a key word and it will show you the related items. The colors of the website are mostly black, gray, and red. It is a classy look, which fits the characteristic of the store.

Goodsearch.com

Goodsearch.com is a search engine by Yahoo. It is designed for private schools or charities to make money for every search. For each search they get a penny. When you search you get about the same as with the regular Yahoo searches, but for more detailed searches you might go to them. The website is very basic and has little outside links.

For Designers

This is mainly for Designers. Because most major places I have found that have other people's portfolio you have to be a paid member. This one is free. And you can post your work and have companies look at your stuff in hopes of hiring someone.
www.coroflot.com

My utmost

If you've ever heard of Oswald Chambers and his book My utmost for his highest. This website has something for each day and if you want to read something "inspiring" and good reading.
www.myutmost.org

Orkut

This is not the coolest designed website. It's similiar to xanga.com. I got on it because most of my international friends are a memeber. So it's a great way if you have friends overseas to keep in touch.
www.orkut.com

The Knot

I have lots of friends getting married. All of them are signed up to this site... It's really helpful in making plans and giving tips.
www.theknot.com

xanga.com

I used to use this quite often. It is fun to look at all the past blogs and stuff. It is interesting to see how your life used to be. I really like the fact that it updates you on your blogg. I also love the fact that you can kind of make it your own. xanga is very easy to start on!

obu.edu Tigermail

I use this site constantly. I think it is pretty easy to navigate. The only thing that I don 't like is that sometimes it is hard to find the font selection bar. Other than that I really like this site. It is very accesable, and I love how it shows up even if the internet isn't working!

romanticcreations.com

I've been helping someone shop for an engagement ring/wedding band lately, and www.romanticcreations.com is a site where you can design your own ring from stone to setting to size, which is helpful when you're trying to get ideas or show a jeweler what you want. And let's be honest, it's just fun to look at.

TV Show online

The only TV show I watch is Grey's Anatomy... i'm sure lots of you do. But if you miss it or any other show on ABC you can watch it for free online! That's pretty exciting
http://dynamic.abc.go.com/streaming/landing

Steep and Cheap

This site is mainly for outdoot people. There's only one product for sale on the page. Sounds weird... but it goes on a major sale... like sometimes up to 85% off. But once they're sold out, it's gone, and a new item goes up. Pretty cool.
www.steepandcheap.com

paypal.com

If you've ever bought or sold anything online, there's a good chance you've used PayPal. Unless you're Lindsey Dowd, you probably agree that it's a smart way to do transactions, as you can syncronize your bank accounts and have people pay you via Credit Card. The website is organized well, and has good customer service, as I had to deal with a fraudulent Nigerian customer this morning (but that's another story).

guess the logo

OK, I've found the coolest website. It's called guessthelogo.com You play this game where you guess the logo of very famous companies like ebay, net flix, google, etc. It has 6 choices that look very similiar and you have to choose which one is their logo. It's really fun, but really hard. Go look at this website, it's cool.

chordfind.com

For any musicians or aspiring musicians out there, a site I use pretty frequently is ChordFind.com. I mainly use it to find chords for the guitar, but they've recently added versions for four-string instruments and the keyboard. It's really easy to use; you just tell it the name of the chord you need and it shows you on a picture of the neck of a guitar which frets you put your fingers on. They've also added an option for lefties and a reverse chord find feature where you tell it where your fingers are and they tell you the name of the chord. It's not necessarily a very pretty site, but it's really functional.

Lyrics on Demand

Lyrics on Demand is an extremely functional site. It's the easiest that I've found to find lyrics on for any band. However, the design element is ZERO. There is simply a list of the letters of the alphabet. Once you choose a letter you can choose from the sections that letter is divided down in to and find the band that the lyrics are sung by. You can then choose the album, and finally the song. It's nice with all the itunes buying these days, to have a fairly accurate place to go read lyrics. The web site is very bland. There is no design whatsoever, but one has to consider if there should be. Though it would be nice to at least throw in a little color.

Check it out:

www.lyricsondemand.com

Sandersonimages.com

Sanderson Images is composed of some good friends of mine who do portrait and wedding photography. The design of the web site is very classy. The colors are simple and the music is fitting. The navigation bar at the bottom of the site, which is always present, makes it easy to find the information you want...whether it's pricing or examples of their portfolios. The only negative is the time it takes for the slideshow albums to load. I think this could be helped by providing another option to the slideshow with music. All in all though, it's an easily navigated and beautifully designed web site.

Check it out:

Sandersonimages.com

pattygriffin.com

The web site for folk artist, Patty Griffin, is very asthetically pleasing. However, it is incredibly hard to navigate. It takes a few minutes to load, and once loaded you have to wait for this picture of Patty holding a balloon to float by with navigation options. IT's really pretty, but not ver practical. As a fan trying to find concert information, it's frustrating because there is a lot of waiting. It's too complicated for the average computer user in my opinion. I have often given up and sought the information I was looking for elsewhere.

Check it out:

www.pattygriffin.com
I found a web site that might be helpful to everyone as they are designing their final projects. It's ideas and helpful articles for web design. Hope some of you can use it!

Target

I think that targets website could have been done a little better than it has been done. It looks bad that they have sub-navigations on the top and the side of the web page. Also when you click on the other pages to look at the different categories the colors dont change and the sub pages are the same as the main page, which doesnt keep the person interested in the website. In general i think that website is kinda frustrating to look at because it isnt interesting to look at.

Food Network

I like this website because it is very useful and realistic to use since most people start cooking a lot more when they live in apts. I like the use of color and how with each holiday that comes up it has interesting recipes to use. I also like how the sub-navigation things are used like a folder tab and the colors are very cool and inviting.

Designer Today

I found this website today when trying to find an article for an outside reading assignment for Ted Barnes. I just thought it was a good sight. They have tutorials for several different software programs, articles, job listings, and software reviews. It is set up nicely and easy to navigate. Check it out at www.designertoday.com

IMDB

I really like the website imdb.com It's a website where you can look up movies and find out different things about them. Like who is in the movie, triva about the movie, how long the movie is, when it was made, etc. It's really cool. Check it out.

tvguide.com

In case any of you watch TV, you might want to check out tvguide.com. I mainly just use the listings section, but there is tons of other info on the site, too. If you ever find yourself needing to know any info about a show, it's the place to go. It's especially handy since you can type in your time zone and cable provider so you get really accurate listings, etc.

IBM website

I really like this website a lot. It is very easy to navigate, and it has a search engine in case you are looking for something more specific on the site. Each page has a simple design and they do not change dramatically from page to page. The products page is very informative, it has a lot of different stuff on there, that you would next expect IBM to carry. There are tons of places to get support if needed, and they also make it usable to people of all origins by allowing them to change the site to suit which country you are in. Then when you change the country, it updates the site with the new language and other things offered or not offered in that particular country.

photobucket.com

photobucket.com is another to add to the long list of web-based image hosts. I've used it a few times, and it's pretty good. It gives you the URL as well as tag for each picture you upload, so it's really easy to import the pictures into other documents/sites, etc. You can also make slide shows and save them on the site. You can sign up for a free account or pay for a pro account, which gives you more flexibility in using the site. Sometimes it's a little slow loading the pages with lots of pictures, but all around it does the job.

The Societe Anonyme

http://artgallery.yale.edu/socanon/
It's like you're in an art gallery itself

Like.com

www.like.com

This is a new type of search engine, as the search engine goes by appearance. You are given pictures and then the availability to search for those products in the pictures, or what is like them. You can click different parts to narrow your search to find the exact accessory you want.

Barnes and Noble

Well, it's that time of year again. Businesses are anxiously awaiting black Friday--that time when you hope to sell enough to get "out of the red." Well, Barnes and Noble is no different, and they're pulling out all the stops--and the first place they're working is on the web. It's a clean looking site, but honestly, it's not as comprehensive as I wished. It'ss nicely decorated for the holidays. Colors of Christmas abound. The traditional Barnes and Noble color is a green town, and it is also prevalent--from the navigation tabs to the search bar.

Honestly, I found the site to be focused more and more on new products. They're trying to push sales on bestseller products. Access to rare books was limited. Navagability is effective with a fully functioning search bar on the left side of the page. One weakness, however, is the inability to find certain products without going to that navigation tab or that part of the page (or at least without clicking a whole lot).

Boeing

The average college student probably wouldn't visit Boeing's website, but it's pretty cool. The site is geared mostly toward potential customers--defense firms and airlines. It is visually appealing, though, with lots of cool composite pictures. I also like the way things move over the screen, without using flash. Boeing's site is fairly detailed, and after clicking on multiple links you can find out pretty much anything you want to know about a given topic (like employment--I visited there and found several pages about how to apply and what qualifications the company is looking for).

For all you cooks and bakers out there...

I was looking for a recipe for pumpkin cheesecake today (I really love cheesecake!) and I stumbled on the Ladies Home Journal Website. It has some really great recipes! I copied off several pumpkin cheesecake recipes. If you are thinking of making something during Thanksgiving like I would like to, you should check it out! They have a little bit of everything....www.lhj.com/recipe

IMB Arkansas Student Ministry Story

I went to the International Mission Board website that we looked at in class the other day and there was a story about Arkansas Student Ministries on the front page. I just thought that was kind of "neat." The story probably won't be on the homepage for very long, so go check it out today! It gives this state some very positive recognition! www.imb.org

BBC Online Review

When I looged onto BBC, I was immediately confused. I know BBC stands for British Broadcasting Company so it's a mass media website. BUT if you aren't familiar with it to begin with, it is extremely confusing. It immediately goes to the international version but it doesn't help much. Everything is organized well but again you have to know what you're looking for.

First I tried te accessability link at the top. You can choose different options to make your browsing experience easier but it's a semi-long process to do so. As a web user that could be inconvienient because you don't find what you're looking for immediately. However, if you're a frequent user, it's probably helpful.

The second thing I noticed is that there is no information about the BBC in the user's direct line of sight. Instead it's at the bottom. Not helpful for an new user.

The UK version is just more Britain centered, like a national newspaper. This can also be customized to fit the city or metro one lives in.

Overall the site is a huge media center, not just something to find the news.

Piperlime.com

I received an interesting advertisment in the mail today from a new shoe site put out by gap. They had spent alot of money on this tiny little mail piece, so I decided to go to their site, and it was pretty cool, I think that it has been done in flash, but I am not sure.
www.piperlime.com

Craigslist.com

I have just visited craigslist.com looking for a job, and I was not impressed by what I saw. It was very plane and boring. It seemed very basic and not up to date with the other job sites.

polyphonic spree

The Polyphonic Spree's website is very trendy and the colors that they use are very bold and catch your eye. I like this website because it is very life like with the use of butterflies and the lips that are used as the navigation bar in the middle of the page. I like how there is a border along the sides and the bottom of the page, it makes the website very different. If you like the polyphonic spree this is a great website to get to know more information about them.

WeatherBug revamp

Don't know if anyone looks at WeatherBug for anything but I got used to it because I used to have it when I got AIM. Well they've redesigned their website and it's crap now. It used to be informative and easy to navigate and now it's not. It's quite confusing.

American Eagle

ae.com is a really good website. I like to go there to look for new clothes either to buy online or to see them before I buy them in the store. You can look at different views of the clothes, different colors. It's cool. Also, you can buy gift cards online. Check it out.

Branson

Check out explorebranson.com. It tells you everything you need to know about Branson which is where I want to move when I graduate. The colors are boring but it tells you about everything from shows and shopping to buying real estate there. It's a great site that tells you everything about the town.

leoburnett.ca

You probably should check out this site. It is award winning. I am pretty excited about this site because you can draw stuff with the mouse. Ok so just check it out it is her personal or his personal web site showing his portfolio off.

ford motor company

On the home page of the Ford website I like how it has a flashplayer of the new vehicles that are out for the next year, the only thing i dont like about it is that it doesnt show the vehicles long enough. The whole flashplayer is really fast and it is hard to see the vehicles. I do however like how each navigation has a different color everytime you click on it. That adds variety to the website and keeps the persons eye drawn in. I also like that on the home page everything is set up in a vertical manner because it makes it easier to read things that way, the home page is also set up in a very organized way and it offers a lot on the home page.

urban outfitters

Urban Outfitters is a really trendy website. Since the store is really trendy and "urbanish" you could say, the sight compliments the store well. I like the website because it is has a clean white background which makes the person's eye be drawn to the clothes. The clothes that are on the website that are on sale have a scribbled line or an arrow pointing to it so that the person's eye is drawn to the sale items. I also like this site because it has more than clothes to offer. It offers accessories, things for apartments, and even a place to look for jobs if you want to work there. Their website is very easy to use and very easy to navigate around.

communication arts

communicationarts.com, is a pretty amazing website, not really because of how it looks or anything. But I liked to look at all the amazing designer awards and stuff. To look at all that talent is pretty awesome. I also found 5 other web sites that I thought were the neatest. So I liked this site because it lead me to other better sites

Sidestep.com

This website is really cool because it conglomerates all the big travel sites:--travelocity.com, cheaptickets.com, orbitz.com, priceline.com

It finds the cheapest rate for that given date and airline based on a number of travel websites. The website is very well-organized. It utilizes a cool flash tool call "smart sort" that visually represents the prices and progress for the search query. The colors ar emainly blue and orange, interestingly like many other travel websites. It has big bullets and outlinks at the top of the page. It's a very interesting and an effective concept. It takes one very smoothly to an outside site once you find the page of a company that offers you the best price.

The Weather Channel

The Weather Channel website (www.weather.com) is quite detailed. It is easily navigable, while being informative at the same time. It's very colorful, and there are links to nearly anything you'd want--10 day forecast, weekend, hour-by-hour, etc.

All that one must do is enter in a zip code or city and state and they'll pull up a detailed forecast. The market is families, but also, interestingly, it's marketed toward commuters, business travelers, and the like. Ski forecasts also exist. Despite something as "unbiased" as the weather, the channel and website are trying to catch a market of people who want to watch "reality" weather shows like storm stories. so, the website has an increasing amount of video content as well.

Old Navy Website Review

Old Navy. com is a pretty cool website. Currently, they have holiday colors on their page. The main navigation is across the top but once you enter one of those areas of the website then the sub navigation is on the left. Something that I really like about the site right now is that they have a gift guide area. This lets you look for certain items in a specific price range so you can find the right gift for your friend or family member. They offer online shopping and sizes up to 3X. They're clothes are cheap too so that's good! You can also redeem gift cards on their sites. It's a cool site. The usability is great. All of their menus make sense, so you know where you going. Also, it's not too cluttered. I like Old Navy.com

New York Times

Today I am reviewing the New York Times website. I think this website has classical elegance. It is not very colourful or exciting but the overall layout is pleasing to the eye. I especially like the header and Times logo at the top of the page making it appear to actually look like a newspaper not just a webpage. The headlining stories are centered and are easily found with their dominant blue headlines. To the right are teasers to some of the other articles that are available to read and a small stockmarket chart. Something I found useful was the navigation on the left side. I thought it clearly marked and with subcategories to specify. At the bottom of the page is a basic list of the contents which could help you to find what you are looking for easily or to simply know that it is not there. Another feature I like is that there are timers to let the reader know how long ago a story was posted.

University of Central Arkansas

uca.edu is a pretty frustrating Web site. It looks kind of like Ouachita's, because of the purple colour scheme, but is much more difficult to navigate. First of all, the site is slow to load (on each of several computers, though each had the same ISP), which can be frustrating for audiences who are looking for a quick browse. Also, it is difficult to navigate in that clicking on a link to access something will bring you to another menu of links, and often another--and sometimes lead you back to where you started. It's not unavigable, but audiences would really have to be motivated to seek out information in order to keep looking.

I am a graphic Design Major and I use google constantly, to look up images and such. It is a good image refrence when you are trying to draw something on the comp. Also I use google to look up websites, so that I don't have to remember websites addresses. It makes it easy to navigate. Google is the best. google.com it is so popular you can just type google in the nav bar

ebay!

Well I really love this website. I use it a whole lot. I loke to shop for designer clothing. You can get really good things for cheap. The layout is nice, but it is kind of hard to navigate. I like the pictures, and how buisiness but fun it is. It is really official and I trust it. Use money orders not paypal. Have fun bidding but don't bid on too much. I love this site.

Dallas Stars

At Dallasstars.com there just about everything you need to know about the season, hockey apparel, and news about the Stars activities and games. The website is of course the colors of the team - green, gold, white, and black. It has several ads on the home page from television/radio broadcasts to beer to contests. They have a schedule along the left hand side and another one closer to the bottom with clips from previous games and other multimedia. The website has navigation along the top and other links (that are under the main menus) to the side. An example would be the season's schedule. One last unique feature that this website has is its external link to the NHL website.

First Bank Farmersville

My hometown bank has given their website a makeover. First thing I noticed was the color change. It now uses browns, maroons, and black, where as it used to be blue and white. They have also added a personal element, at least for those of us who live in Farmersville. The header background is a picture of the original bank. The navigation has become much more detailed. This has made the website much more user friendly because now it will not take as much searching for the section you need. The only things that makes it somewhat difficult is that people like me who have been using the old website, it is going to take some practice to use this site.

hi5.com

While I am in posting mode I would just like to inform everyone that last night I visited hi5.com, which is like a facebook for the world, and I saw a setting to edit the CSS... and I knew what that meant, so I made it all pretty using what we learnt in class with headers and footers and colours and all those things I used to be confused about. yay

MSN Review

MSN is a website most of us will use on an almost daily basis. It is the home of hotmail and MSN messenger, two sites I use regularly. The page is attrative with the dominant blue background setting off the pictures used with articles. The flash of the latest news is very effective as it has something for everyone; business, entertainment and feature articles for the day. It is very well laid out and though it seems busy at first, the blocked off segments allow the eye to easily find what it is looking for. Everything is easy to find with no drop-down menus or confusing links. I like the ability it gives to personalize what you want to see and the local weather right in the corner already set to where you are. I also like that you can change the colour theme when you become bored with traditional blue. All in all I think that MSN is a brilliantly user friendly website and attractive to the eye.

ABC

I like abc.com because I can catch up on my favorite shows like Grey's Anatomy, Desperate Housewives, and Brothers & Sisters. It's cool because you can get reacaps on what has happend, watch previous episodes and also see what next week's show is going to be about. They also have spotlights on your favorite actors. ABC.com is a cool website. You should check it out.

YWAM

I was searching for jobs openings online the other day and came across "Youth With a Mission" or "YWAM's" site. They have LOTS of job openings, especially in the area of graphic design if you are interested, AND they have a pretty nice site. Check it out at www.ywam.org

Yahoo.com review

Unlike the first website that I reviewed I am more familiar with the this one. I like wbsite because it is organized. I like they way it has the whatever the latest news is together that way it is easier to look at all that interests you. I like how what ever you can do on this website it is in the navigation bar. Although the website has a lot of links and info on it it doesn't look cluttered. I like how the headlines standout. It looks like they are bevel and emboss with a gradient to make them pop out from the other content next to it.I like the fact that there is a search engine at the top of the page and how the button is yellow so that it is easy to see. I don't understand why there is two buttons of the same thing on the front page. The white space is used well. Overall I think that the website is done well and user friendly for the most part.

Disney Website Review

I reviewed the Disney website. I think it's a really cool website. When you first begin, the website uses flash to update you on the latest release Disney has. Then you are taken to the main website which has tons of color and is very interactive. The navigation is at the top of the page and it is also the main content of the page. It is designed like a map and it directs you to the many different sections of the website. One thing I didn't like is when you move your mouse over a section of the website, a menu appears and your mouse just goes crazy over all of the different options. I don't think that was a very smart idea for childeren who would be accessing the site. However, I think it has a wonderful design that is very pleasing to the eye and would easily grab a child's attention. It has very clear options, so you know exactly where you want to go. The usability is terrific. I liked this site.

Arkansas.com Review

I chose Arkansas.com mostly out of curiosity. I’ve lived in Arkansas my whole life, and I thought it would be nice to see what we have to offer.

I was actually fairly pleasantly surprised with what I found. It’s still not the best site in the world, though. Style-wise, I’m not in love with the colors. There are a lot of text and small graphics/pictures which can be a little busy. There is a lot of navigation, ranging from drop-down menus along the top of every page to lists down the right and left of pages. It’s a little boring, but they don’t have the most thrilling content to work with. If they are wanting to reach a young, school-age audience, though, they need to step it up a little.

This site is mainly targeting tourists and residents looking to take advantages of the state’s parks, events, and recreational opportunities. Even if I don’t love the look of the site, it is very informative. You can find on the site “Things to Do,” “Places to Stay,” and information about “Outdoors” in Arkansas and “State & Federal Parks” in Arkansas. Since there is SO much information, though, I think you really need to know what you’re looking for. The site can be a little overwhelming for browsing.

The site does a pretty good job of presenting as much information as possible about opportunities in the state. I would suggest using it more for its links to other related sites rather than for the information it contains, though. Also, you need to have some direction on what you are looking for when you go to the site, or it is really overwhelming.

jordilabanda.com

Jordi Labanda is a Spanish designer/artist. His flash site, www.jordilabanda.com, is pretty decent. It has lots of images so you can see all of his work and products. However, it takes a while to load the images, and there's no way to order anything on the site. It's a fun site for the artwork, though.

Pilotdrift

Hey, I was just looking for information on a band for a graphic design project, and I landed on the band, Pilotdrift's website for the first time. These guys are all from my home town and I know most of them. Their website is very involved...and it really defines them...it just fits! There are a few things I would change, such as adding a list of upcoming gigs, and it does take a while to load...but I enjoyed the site. Check it out at www.pilotdrift.com

Cnet

This site is one of my favorite sites to check in on, now and again. It is the website for tech enthusiasts like me but also presents itself well enough for those not-so-techy. The vivid colors of the site provides energy in a unique way and the site caters to your needs and wants. It has all the menus logically placed along the left and top and under each area there is a set of sub-links which match pretty well. Basically, if you need to find something, Cnet will get you there. I also like it because it can give as little info as possible to a reader or LARGE amounts, depending on the level you are. If you don't want to see the specs, they have you covered, if you do, they got that too. I like it.

Google Review

When looking at the google site, one can see it is built for the search engine primarily. Which is great, because that is what everyone knows Google for. But as of late, Google has begun adding new options to its website and new ideas, also by buying out old sites and making it a part of the Google monster. To get to these sites, it is a bit harder to do, and one has to go looking for it. The look of Google....which never changes from page to page, can get rather dull. Seeing the multi-color GOOGLE, gets hard on the eyes and you want to see something dark for a change. But, it has become one of the largest sites on the web, and I know I use it for all my search needs, so it obviuously has something going for it.

Millions of blogs

Technorati

By clicking this link, you come to the home of Technorati. Basically, to explain this in Xanga terms, you connect your blog (whether it be xanga, myspace or Blogger..really whatever) to a very...very LARGE network (55 million blogs are connected by this site). You create a free account and add your blogsite by typing in the web address and then you can also enter in search words...so if someone searching technorati is searching for something particular, your site could be included in the search results. It constanly updates, showing new posts, featured ones of the week etc. Also, you have a Technorati ranking...as people connect to your blog and vice versa, your ranking goes up. So if you have a good blog and people like it and connect, your ranking goes up and you get displayed or mentioned more on the technorati website. It's pretty neat.

NetVibes

NetVibes tutorial

If you click on the link above, it takes you to the beginning page of a tutorial for a place called NetVibes. In NetVibes, you can basically create your own web page of RSS feeds. Basically, in the course of setting up your site, you can tell which RSS feeds you want your page to access, it will constantly update those things so you can just go to one site and look at what you want to. Also, it is somewhat designable, as you can move the boxes that contain the different RSS info around and resize them as you see fit. Try it out.

pbs.com

I chose this website because I watch pbs when I was a little kid and was wondering what had changed since then.
The first thing that I noticed was the color. The use of shades of blue and gray make it very calming. I like the fact that the home page has clear divisions for every area they cover. It is very organized and simple. For example, if you would like to see beyond the first story of life and culture, then you click the link "more like this." They also have categories for science, history and hobbies. OBS also has links to outside/national news.
If you like to order shows that you have seen they have a special side bar that said "buy it!"
Along the left and right they have ever more categories not relating exactly to their programs.
For example they have a search bar where you type in your zip code to see the local listings. They also have a link to a page that is specifically about your support. The section on the right is directed totally to parents, kids, and teachers.
The navigation bar along the top is another way to go to the links from the side bar. If you know the exact show you would like info on you can use the "programs a-z" link, but you still have to type in the zip code.
Over all this website it focused on a wide range of viewers, organized, and easy to navagate. The only thing I do not like about it is the zip code search bars.

nordstroms.com

I went to this site today, and it is very helpful. I like the design of it, the pictures are good. It looks elegant and classy just like the store is. You can shop by designer and that is fun, and you can specifically look for anything. I am looking for bridal jewelry so it was very helpful!

Monster.com review

I chose this site because I have seen the commercial about monster.com on t.v. and plus I have never looked at this site so I thought it would be interesting to talk about. Another reason why I chose this site is because I may have to use this site in the near future when looking for a job. First, I like how the navigation is at the top of the screen and that the taps and the writing are big enough to see. The site is very plain and there isn't any movement. Eventhough the front page has its different sections it still looks unorganzied. It seems to me like they just put different information on the the front page to fill it up. I don't like the fact that there are different links everywhere on the first page because when I first came to the site I saw all these different links that had info that I was interested in looking at but I didn't know where to start. I like the section find the right job because it helps you get to the point of your search on this site. I think that the navigation is very user friendly. I like the way the navigation drops down and then when I roll over the different links it highlights purple. I also like the fact that when you click on a link it gives you in depth detail about the information.

Wal-Mart Site Review

The Walmart site is actually one of my favorite places to go. It' s a very simple site color-scheme wise but it is very organized and not over crowded with photos. There' s no flash either and that makes my computer happy.

There are two navigation systems, a left hand text column and a top folder tab bar. I guess its to please anyone that comes to the site. It's kind of redudant though.

The best thing is that you can shop online. When the site first started, this feature was nonexistant. However, there are some items that can't be bought online or they have in store pick up only. That's understandable for big things like furniture, but or smaller items it doesn't make sense. There are also some that are only available in Texas: no online buying, or in store pick up. So if you aren't in Texas, you're SOL. Thankfully I don't buy anything big so I don't have any problems. A good thing is that the prices are lower than Amazon.

New media boy wonder

Fast Company has an interesting article about Rob Curley, the newspaper new media guru who is now VP of Development at Washington Post/Newsweek Interactive. It tracks his career from Kansas to the Post and his interest it making it all local.

International Herald Tribune

This is a newspaper with a primarily international audience--not a lot of U.S. news, except at the bottom.
Some comments:
*The top navigation is kind of confusing, because sometimes you have a pop-down menu, and sometimes you don't.
*There are weather and stock tips on the side; I like that.
*You don't have to sign in/register to read stories, and I really like that.
*There's SO much information, lots of polls and pictures.
*You do have to scroll down a long way to get to some of it, though.
*As far as newspaper websites go, this is pretty good.

Federeal Express

The FedEx website is actually quite navigable and user friendly. Honestly, I chose this site on purpose, because I have some perosnal experience with different forms of shipping (i.e., UPS, DSL, FedEX, and US Postal Service). I have tried every one of them to decide the most efficient way to ship my photography. FedEx is by far the best. Their customer service (which is integrated into the site is great).

Perhaps this is the best place to begin with commenting on site design. FedEx implements package tracking right on the first homepage. This usually takes several clicks to other pages with other shipping companies. You can also paste up to 30 tracking numbers at once.

The site is narrowed down for corporate, individual, and government shipping. The site is not too artistic, but is appealing, and things are easy to find with drop down menus.

US Soccer

The home page on US soccer is set up in a very organized way, the page is very sharp looking and the colors are a good choice to the website. The navigation is on the left side of the page which is very easy to locate and it is also easy to use. The home page also has a ticker running across the top, video on the right side, and a countdown to the next game which is a very good attribute to the home page. Under each navigation bar is a sub-navigation which makes it easier for the person to narrow down the search they are looking for. The pages on the website are set up in a way that it is very easily to read and find things on it. There is also little advertising on the pages which is good because sometimes too much advertising takes away from the page as a whole. Overall I like the website because it is easy to find things and it is a very well put together site.

The website of frustration!

I have been doing research for products that Tri Chi uses for rush. I have found what I needed at Michaels. But they didn't have enough of what I needed in-store, so I thought I would shop for it online. Well, that was a mistake! Their online store and the actual store at two separate stores. What ever they sell in the store can't be bought online.
This a huge mistake on their part. They need to make their website one with their store. Number one, it is inconvenient to the customer. And second it is not made clear that you can not buy things online. I spent several hours not only searching for what I needed(which the search bar was not the greatest of help), but also time on the phone with the store answering my question. I would have to say that Michaels.com lacks in customer convenience and site navigation.

My Yahoo

Most of you probably know about Yahoo.com but I like the website MyYahoo.com It's cool because you can customize the page to have the content that you want to read. It shows TV Listings, movie times, the latest news, and even your yahoo mail account. I think its pretty cool because you can read about what you're interested in on one web page instead of having to jump around to different pages.

Journalism Jobs site

I found a really good website to search for job openings in the field of journalism. The link is www.journalismjobs.com. You can search for openings in several different areas of the field. There are lots and lots of listings.

ESPN review

This site is very complex. The link is www.espn.com. The navigation bar has flash so that when you scroll across something, another navigation list comes down. I especially liked the header on the Major League Baseball page. I believe it is special due to the playoffs going on. The homepage is correctly put in order of importance from top headlines to stories of lesser importance. The pages are very cluttered, but well balanced due to a use of both images and text.
Images on separate pages are closeups, mostly with blurred background. This is due to the size of the image and the importance on focusing on the subject, usually an athlete. I enjoy the site. It is very eye catching and informative.

Dallas Summer Musical

This website has very many flash images. The home page has pictures of the musicals that are playing and that will be playing soon. Each picture is a direct link to the information of the musical. the page it brings you to will tell all the information for that specific musical. It shows you a calendar with the highlighted days of the performances. One helpful navigation tool is the "Quick Jump" search bar. It has a drop down list of all the major pages of the website.
www.dallassummermusicals.org

Ticketmaster Review

I had the website ticketmaster for my website review. The link is www.ticketmaster.com. It is very organized. The navigation is set up into the homepage, ticket exchange, ticket alerts, my account, how to buy and how to sell. Each separate page is very well put together and explains the content very well. On the ticket exchange page, it has a listing of the hot events that are coming up. On the ticket alert page, you can look to see when and where your favorite performers and teams are playing and also what or who is playing at your favorite venue. You can have an account with ticketmaster, but you don't have to which is good that they give an option. With an account, ticketmaster offers faster checkout and email updates about favorite performers, teams, and venues. There are also helpful answers to frequently asked questions on the bottom of pages.
Ticketmaster does have a very simple color scheme, but it does go along with their logo color scheme. One complaint is that they should have more information about the events that they are selling tickets for so prospective buyers can learn a little bit more about what they are purchasing.

MySpace Layout Site

I found this site going through my friends' profiles and I like the way he's got everthing set up. It's all very easy to find with the left-side column navigation and the ads that he has to have on there aren't all up in your face. Now his layouts are amazing. Lannie, you said you've never seen a MySpace page that looks good. I think that you would like the ones this guy has. They are very professional-looking which makes me think he does web design stuff for a living.

Check it out

Mobberly youth

I went to my old youth groups web site. I think that the graphic is a little fuzzy. I do think that it is interesting that they have videos that you could watch. It also has a navigation bar that is easy to understand. I loved how they gave you hints for why the site wasn't working well. mobberlyyouth.com!

SND Coffee

I kind of came across this site (www.sndcoffee.com) accidentally while looking for another cool coffee site that I had seen before (and never found). This is the Web site of an internet-based coffee company. The main colours are kind of brownish, which I thought was fairly soothing and coffee-like. The home pages opens with a section about the company (complete with pictures), and when you click on each section, it gives a listing of available coffees and their sizes and prices and information. Navigation is hosted down the side, and the site is pretty easy to get around.

FBC Searcy

I visited my home church's website the other day for the first time in years, and I was really disappointed. The address is www.firstbaptistsearcy.com. They obviously used a template and filled in info pertaining for our church, but it was done really poorly. The style of the template is really colorful and sharp, but the filler info doesn't match that style; it looks really homemade. All of this may just be because it's my church, and I want it to look good and be unique, but it seems really impersonal. Even the pictures that are used in the design are not pictures of our church members. The only pictures that I found of actual members are on the staff page and the student page. Again, I may be too close to the issue to see it clearly, but I am not a fan.

Salon

When I first said that I wanted to review salon, I had no idea it was about news and stuff. But it is. Salon is a good site if you want to know a bunch about news. Other than the fact that it has ads to join every different time you click on a story. It has a search engine which makes articles easier to find. But, if you aren't a member than you can't exactly get the whole stories just pieces of them. I couldn't tell if the article's are blogs or if they are actual stories. So for someone looking to see if they want to become a member Salon might want to directly say something about its purpose.
The article info is catchy and makes a reader want to know more, but in the middle of every article it says
" Click on the sponsor logo
to read this article and all of Salon for free " It is just kind of anoying, because if it is free you don't really want to become a member and get news letters just to read some stories. I feel like it would be a waiste of time. Although I am not really a newsy person. But it isn't just really hard core news it is also about celebrities and stuff, and some of the graphics are pretty neat right by the articles.
The website also has comics but yet again, you can't read them all because it says...Two choices for reading the rest of this article and all of Salon:! It is just really annoying! they have a chat room or blog thing called table talk. Anyways, I am a little interested in the site, and if I stayed on longer I might join, just because some of the sotries are catchy!

GE Review

I love the graphic of the lightbulb, and the bamboo, it is very interesting and catches your eye, but the rest of the homepage is very boring compared to this. I like how the navigation bar below the picture does not just have a rollover, with another navigation bar that appears when you rollover. When you click on one of these buttons it takes you to that actual page, that then has links that go from there. I love the fact that it has a search for the homepage. And then on the left it also has more specific search areas, if you already know what you are looking for. In the middle of the homepage it has some new stuff that is the headline for things going on now with GE, with links to these pages. Overall i think that the website could have more color throughout, but then again each page always has something at the top that catches your eye, so maybe their point of view is that more is less?

kinda nerdy but cool

Okay, for all the nerds out there like me, J.K. Jowling's website - www.jkrowling.com - is really cool (she's the author of the Harry Potter series). There is loads of information about both her and the books. It's highly interactive (I think it's a flash site), so that the longer you stay with the site, the more you uncover. It plays out like a game, to a certain extent. So - nerdy, but cool, informative, and interactive.

MTV.com Review

The first thing I noticed about MTV.com is that it opened with basically an ad, which is annoying, but not unexpected. The homepage is very modern, with polished, clean lines. It is pretty simply designed, with navigation across the top and then lots of “news” cells filling the rest of the page, all of which is really easy to use. Subpages have their own internal navigation layouts (some down the left, some across the top, tab-style, etc.) according to their purpose. The site is mostly black, white, and shades of gray, which I think is a good choice, because of the amounts of pictures, graphics, and streaming video. If they had chosen anything more colorful or complicated, the page would start to look very busy.

Since MTV is first and foremost a television station, they do have navigation to sites for each of the many versions MTV and to the various shows on those channels. However, television is only a small part of MTV.com. The network has evolved into the primary source of culture (pop and otherwise) for many teens and twenty-somethings, so MTV.com covers everything from movies to style to games and even some politics. They have an MTV Messenger as well as Mobile features. Links to music and video, though, is never more than a click away.

All in all, the site is designed and executed really well for its purpose – to try to transform young people into the MTV generation. They have styled the site according to young people’s tastes, kept it easy to use and navigate, and branched out to cover every aspect of the typical teen’s life.

www.foodnetwork.com

I chose to review the www.foodnetwork.com since I LOVE food. I’ve never been to this specific food website, although I have been to others. This one, like most food websites, has a recipe search and even your own recipe box to store your favorites. The design of the website does a very good job to target their primary audience, food lovers/home cooks. I really liked the option to print the recipe in the size on an index card to put in your own recipe box. Also, on the main page it gives you the top recipe's and what's "in" for the month. (that's my favorite part)
The navigation bar is easy to read and even designed like recipe box index cards with the “flap”. What also makes this site easier to navigate is that it has only one main navigation bar, rather than two or more. The main color is green, a very aesthetically pleasing color, and accentuated by a light, pale yellow, a good compliment, not to mention it’s the color of most index folders for recipe boxes. Overall, I really like the website.

Amazon.com

Amazon.com: we all use it. It's one of the most convenient ways to purchase anything from books to refridgerators to digital cameras to paper clips. It provides options for new and used items.

When I sign onto Amazon, as a returning customer, it greets me with recently viewed items as well as reccommendations based on my recent purchases. I can easily view items I've thought about purchasing, and be tempted to purchase them once again. There is also a search bar conveniently located at the top of the screen. The search bar has two options. You can either search in general, or within a category. Usually the general search yeilds what I am looking for, but in case too many results present themselves, the other option is there as well.

There are also lists of sale/specialty itmes worth considering. As they say, with amazon, everything is literally "one click away." The left navigation provides items by category. You can simply search for books, or films, like you would at a store. And actually, there is the recently added option to shop at actual stores via Amazon including Target and Office Depot.

The style of Amazon is very simple, with consistent colors. It isn't too busy, but the text on the homepage can be a little overwhelming.

Overall, I think that Amazon is easy to use and a great option for all of us with busy lives. The design of the website works well for the user. It is easy to get around. It even remembers your credit cards from former purchases so you can purchase future items by just entering a username and password.

Weather

Weather.com is a great website to get the current temperature or look at what the weather is going to be like today, tomorrow, or for the next ten days. I go there every morning so I can decide what awesome clothes I want to wear for that day. You should check it out.

KATV

Check out KATV.com. It's a great way to get local news and check for job openings..which is what I do. You can also read the talent bios and look at their classified ads section. I really like this website.

I like this site

I like ebay, because it is colorful, and it has lots of information on it. I find that it is easy to access what you want to find. It also is cool because there is not a mall in Arkadelphia!

CNN website review

CNN.com is a sight I visit regularly. It is easy to navigate and very informative. Because it is a news site the visual layout is slightly different than other sites. There is a large portion of the site which is actually text. One of my favorite features is the popular/interesting stories that come up under the heading "Latest News." The navigation allows me to choose by title different stories that might be of interest, and in essence: get the news at a glance.

Something that is really helpful about CNN is the different types of navigation. The page is full of links. At the top the news is sorted by category, so if you are interested in just one particular type of news you can read its headlines by following the links.
There is also a search bar, which allows me to look up any topic I may be interested in that I do not see a display for.

One of the most frustrating things to me, is the use of video. Some of the headlines have a little video icon next to them, and if you click on it, in order to hear the story you must wait for the video to download. Usually I'd rather just read the news, so if i casually click on a headline because it's interesting before realizing it's a video link, it's a little frustrating.

Obviously, from a visual standpoint, CNN is a little blander than most websites, however, I think this is proportional to the content. The news isn't about glam, it's about copy, and copy is what you get.

The web site has very little advertising, which is nice.

Overall, I think the web site is well done. It does what it's intended to do, and is easy to use for it's audience.

http://www.computerhope.com/learnhtm.htm
Here is a helpful website. This particular section is a FAQ section about html and web design. There are several question headings and you can select them for the answers. It is very helpful when you're trying to figure out how to do something you can't quite remember...or do not yet know how to do.

The Art Institute of Chicago Review

The School of the Art Institute of Chicago’s website attracted me especially since I’m a graphic designer. However, the navigation seems to be a little complicated. There is so much information that it would be difficult to find if someone was looking for something specific, so the navigation could have been created a little more simple. But I think the site is aesthetically pleasing, which is perfect for its main audience, artists. Since this website is a for a school, the users are students who like lots of things to be exciting. The homepage of the School is a little confusing to know where to click., even the colors, brown over black, don’t work together so well. And it doesn’t flow with the rest of the website. however, I really liked the way they displayed the artwork, scrolls horizontally across the page. The design on the top and bottom of the page is very nice and each page has a different design, which is great to look at something a little new, but still continuous from the previous pages. Once I finally figured out the website better, it made it much easier to navigate. This site might not be the easiest to figure out the first few seconds of looking and surfing it, but once you go to a few pages, it is easy to get around. Overall, I think they could’ve made a few more changes to make it a little easier, especially since it is an art website... more seems to be expected from artists.
The Museum’s website seemed to be designed much better and easier navigation, yet very aesthetically pleasing. The design of the homepage does a good job to get the audience already involved in the artwork and the weebsite and their values by using the phrase, “A place for ____” Another positive aspect is that the homepage is not clustered with information, and there are plenty of links that are easy to understand where to find somethign specific. The colors are professional and calm, cool colors. Sincethis website is for all ages, the simplicity is more user friendly.

Pbase

www.pbase.com

This website is a great tool on a number of levels. It's great for photographers, both amateur and professional, to show off their work. Individuals can access a free amount of space or pay for more to host their images. It's also a great way to look of high quality images, as an alternative to seraching them on google or yahoo.

Fredmiranda.com

A site that I frequently visit is www.fredmiranda.com

This site is organized quite well, and is a great tool for photographers--both amateurs and professionals. It is set up like a forum, and there are convenient button tools for navigation at the top. These buttons link to different areas of the site--equipment reviews, forums, galleries, and software. One has to set up an account to access all areas of the site, but the images and the speed on the site is very nice.
